Empire, CO Mudjacking and Slab Lifting

Empire sits along Clear Creek at the base of Berthoud Pass, a small town squeezed between steep rock faces where usable building ground is thin and often built up with imported fill. Unlike the deep clay soils of the Denver plains, Clear Creek County properties frequently sit on shallow soil over granite bedrock, which means water does not soak in evenly. Instead it channels along the bedrock surface, finding the path of least resistance, and that path is often straight under a garage slab or driveway that was poured over fill placed against the rock. The town's location at the mouth of the canyon also means it catches runoff funneling down from higher elevations during spring melt, on top of its own snow load through a long mountain winter. We start every job with a walk-through of the slab and the ground around it. A settled slab that is still structurally sound is a straightforward lift: small ports, roughly one to two inches, drilled through the concrete, cement-based slurry pumped underneath under pressure to fill the void and raise the slab, then the ports patched flush. If a slab has cracked into multiple pieces or the soil beneath it is still actively washing out, lifting it would just mean lifting it again in a year or two, so we will recommend crack repair or a partial replacement instead and explain why. Because the bedrock itself does not move, the fix is usually more predictable once we confirm where the water is traveling.
