A lot of that infrastructure, including sidewalks and driveway aprons, is now well past the point where original subgrade compaction is doing much for it. Adams County's clay content plays its part too, expanding and contracting through wet springs and dry summers, but five decades of freeze-thaw cycling has done at least as much damage, working into hairline cracks and widening the voids underneath older slabs winter after winter. Because Northglenn's original neighborhoods were built on a fairly consistent grid with mature street trees, root intrusion is a more common contributor to settlement here than in newer suburbs.
